This EdCamp was a perfect way to come back after a reading break! Alike the shortened EdCcamp we had a few weeks ago, I loved being able to share and learn from those around me and come together with those who have common passions and interests. Having extended time this EdCamp was really beneficial in allowing us to build off of each other ideas and make more connections. We were able to cover more areas of each topic and discuss how we may implement each discussed concept in our own teaching and throughout our practicums.
The first group I was in was mental health and wellness where we shared our personal experiences and were able to relate, connect and learn together. We started by discussing the issues and stigmas of mental health and the idea of determining who deserves help. One of our main points was looking at how we can help our students have the tools to manage and prioritize their health as well as creating a place where they feel supported and able to express themselves and their needs. We related the concept to the idea of “not being disabled enough” to get extra support or a diagnosis to the stigma around mental health where often people feel their mental wellbeing isn’t “bad enough” to get help. After discussing from a students perspective we transitioned into the mental health of teachers and the importance of taking care of yourself. We discussed the analogy of putting your oxygen mask on before you help others to represent the importance of your own health. As a teacher you are not benefiting your students and their learning if you yourself are not well.
Even with the 40 minute discussion we still felt pressed for time and I would have loved to expand on this conversation and continue brainstorming and sharing our ideas.
