I was definitely having flashbacks to last year during todays Zoom! As much as I loved the dog show and share, I realized how much I love in person learning and discussions and not through little squares on a screen. That being said I found this weeks guest speaker was very insightful and points of discussion brought up some interesting questions and considerations. I though it was interesting to hear a parents perspective on the stigma of learning disabilities and supportive strategies to helping all learners be successful in the classroom and in life.
Something that stood out to me in her slide show was one of the ableist examples, the idea of not being “disabled enough”. The idea of having a certain point of struggle in which intervention can take place and access to learning tools or other support can be granted. On the topic of inclusion in the classroom, there needs to be a shift from this mindset to a structure based around the universal design for learning where all students have access to tools, technology, help and adaption. This design helps all students work at a suitable levels, be challenged at a suitable level, be included and feel supported in individual learning. There will always be students who need more adaptation and assistance in their learning than others but how do we designate this point of struggle and determine what resources are given based on this?
